Artists Statement

The paintings I make are a kind of mirror which allows glimpses of spiritual insight into the numinous. Each piece strives towards that technical mastery shown by figures such as Rembrandt and Titian whilst also putting on display those timeless human mysteries and drama which are often rooted within the archetypal and subconscious. My process is akin to a kind of alchemy, wherein germinal sketches of rough ideas through a somewhat lengthy process of addition, reduction and refinement are transformed into finished paintings. Through this process the works are imbued with a kind of 'life' of their own, allowing them to become more than the sum of their parts so that they will serve as potent symbols of human transformation.  Much of the content in my work seeks to explore the inner reality of the imaginal and its relation to waking life, by creating a world, with its own landscape, inhabitants and history, one that also strangely mirrors our own. I am currently drawing a great deal of inspiration from my local region, and in particular the Bunya Mountains, which have immediately captured my imagination and thus a narritave is slowly taking form and is present in my latest work.

I have works in private collections throughout most of Australia and some overseas.
